A new star ignited in the night sky of every system in New Eden in late 2014, signalling the apparent extinction of the Jove and lighting the fuse for a decade of Drifter, Triglavian, and Pochven storylines.
Caroline's Star - the night the Jove went silent
In mid-November YC116 (November 2014) capsuleers began noticing a new bright object in the sky of every system in New Eden - visible simultaneously, in clear violation of the laws of physics. The phenomenon was first photographed and catalogued by the explorer Caroline Grace, and the player community quickly named it Caroline's Star.
Over the following two weeks the object brightened dramatically, peaking around 26 November 2014. CCP later confirmed via the in-character Sisters of EVE statement that the source was a "stellar-level disruption of space-time" centred on the star of system W477-P in the Jove region UUA-F4 - the heart of the long-isolated Jove Empire. The same statement tied the event to the contemporaneous Thera Incident, in which the SoE's wormhole-space colony was wrecked by the same shockwave.
The patch tie: the climax landed almost exactly on top of the Rhea expansion, released 9 December 2014. Rhea introduced the Tactical Destroyers, the Confessor in particular, and - crucially - the Jove Observatories that suddenly appeared in hundreds of systems, guarded by the new Circadian Seekers and the hostile Drifters. Caroline's Star is the in-fiction event that explains why those structures became visible: with the Jove civilisation apparently extinct, their stealth was failing.
Why it matters for returning players: Caroline's Star is the anchor of EVE's modern story arc. Without it there is no Drifter threat, no Into the Abyss Triglavian content, no Invasion, and no Pochven region. If you stopped playing before late 2014, almost everything CCP has written for the universe since builds on this single event.
The star is still visible in the night sky of every system today - a permanent skybox change, more than ten years later.
