The Jove are not aliens. They're a branch of humanity that came through the EVE Gate with the other founder populations and embraced genetic manipulation hard enough that they became, by the time of the modern empires, functionally alien - paler, longer-lived, technologically superior, and increasingly afflicted by a hereditary neurological condition the lore calls the Jovian Disease. They built three successive empires; the third - the Jovian Directorate - was the one capsuleers knew. The Jove gave the Caldari Ishukone corporation the capsule technology that makes capsuleers possible. Without them, the entire player population of EVE would not exist. They were the reason the universe had immortal pilots at all.

The Jove withdrawal from active politics was already underway at the time of the Empyrean Age (YC110 / June 2008), when their seat at the CONCORD assembly went unoccupied and the Directorate stopped sending diplomatic signals. By the early 2010s the silence was effectively total - CONCORD's last confirmed contact was YC112 (2010 in real-world time). Sisters of EVE expeditions to Jove space found shipping lanes empty, stations unresponsive, fleets simply absent. The lore community noticed first; the player base broadly only noticed when CCP forced the issue.

That came on 26 November 2014, when capsuleers across New Eden looked up to see Caroline's Star - a sudden bright object visible from every system, the visible flash of a Jove-region supernova arriving at light speed across years. The mainline lore explanation, established over the months that followed, was that the supernova destroyed an ancient Talocan stellar lattice array in orbit of the dying star, triggering a quantum event that collapsed the Jovian gate network. Whatever was left of the Jove was now cut off from New Eden. Within weeks, Circadian Seekers and Jove Observatories began appearing across known space - the first signs of the Drifters, a heavily-modified Jovian-derived population that would inherit the Jove's hardware and become EVE's principal antagonist for years.

The arc was not a single event. It was a slow withdrawal, a sudden silence, a supernova as a punctuation mark, and an inheritor faction emerging from the wreckage. Sisters of EVE eventually issued public statements acknowledging the Jove were "gone" in any politically-meaningful sense. CCP's official lore page on the Jove still hedges - "many believe the Jove are gone" - preserving the ambiguity that has powered fan theorising for over a decade. Pochven, Triglavians, Drifters, the entire Anoikis-adjacent storyline of the late 2010s and early 2020s is downstream of the Jove vanishing. They built the universe capsuleers play in, and then they left it to the heirs.
