The Drifter Crisis - Assassination of Empress Jamyl Sarum I
On 21 August YC117 (2015) a Drifter taskforce ambushed the Amarr imperial flagship in Safizon, destroyed the Avatar-class titan TES Seraph, and killed Empress Jamyl Sarum I - the dramatic peak of the 2015 Drifter Crisis arc that ended with the coronation of Empress Catiz I.
The Drifter Crisis - Assassination of Empress Jamyl Sarum I
The Drifter Crisis of YC117 (2015) was the year-long arc that turned the Drifters from a curious pop-up encounter into the most consequential in-fiction antagonist EVE Online had produced. It started in early 2015 when Drifter battleships began appearing throughout known space, hunting capsuleers and harassing empire fleets out of the Jove Observatories that had appeared the previous winter (covered in Circadian Seekers and Jove Observatories Appear and the Caroline's Star event). The Tiamat release made them a permanent fixture and gave players the Svipul tactical destroyer to fight back with.
The dramatic peak came at 22:14 NEST on 21 August YC117. Empress Jamyl Sarum I was en route to Safizon to formally commission the Amarr Navy's new Imperial Issue Abaddon-class flagship TES Auctoritas. Her escort included her personal Avatar-class titan, the TES Seraph, and a substantial Imperial Guard fleet. As the convoy arrived in system, a Drifter taskforce uncloaked. One coordinated volley of doomsday weapons destroyed the TES Seraph. A second, smaller volley vapourised the escape pod. The Drifters then warped out, leaving capsuleers and crews behind in shock. The Court Chamberlain Bureau in Hedion confirmed her death within hours.
Jamyl had been the most unstable and most powerful character in Amarr politics. Her resurrection during the Elder War of YC110, her casual destruction of an entire Minmatar Republic Fleet with a Sleeper-derived superweapon, and her erratic later behaviour had made her a divisive figure in-universe. Her killing - by an enemy nobody yet understood, on a battlefield filled with capsuleer witnesses - broke the sense that the Empires sat above capsuleer reach.
The Amarr Succession Trials followed, and on 27 September YC118 (2016) Catiz I of House Tash-Murkon was crowned the new Empress at the Basilica of St. Gheinok the First Prophet in Dam-Torsad. Her elevation shifted Amarr politics meaningfully - Tash-Murkon had been a fringe royal house. CCP marked the occasion with the Purity of the Throne in-game event, and the assassination/coronation sequence remains the most-cited "live lore" event in EVE history. The Drifter / Sleeper / Jove threads opened here paid off years later in Into The Abyss, the Triglavian Invasion, and the creation of Pochven.
Wreck of TES Seraph
The wreck of the TES Seraph still sits where it fell, only a few kilometers off the Amarr Navy Assembly Plant in Safizon (Domain, near Safizon II Moon 1). Aura's in-game information panel reads simply: "Wreck of TES Seraph. This ship, piloted by Empress Jamyl Sarum I, was destroyed by a fleet of Drifters." The Avatar-class hull broke in two on impact and energy still crackles through the superstructure - a permanent in-game memorial to the most-cited live-lore event in EVE history, visitable in high-sec without a beacon by warping to the station and burning the short distance to the debris field.
