The largest PLEX for Good drive in EVE history - $501,652 raised for UNHCR and Ukrainian humanitarian relief, with CCP matching player donations dollar-for-dollar up to a $250,000 cap.
PLEX for GOOD - Ukraine Humanitarian Relief (2022)
On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Within two weeks, more than two million refugees had fled westward across Ukraine's borders; the UN refugee agency UNHCR was scrambling to scale up operations across Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and Moldova; and millions of Ukrainians remained inside the country under active bombardment. The pace and scale of the displacement was the fastest in Europe since World War II.
CCP announced a Ukraine drive on 9 March 2022 with the campaign going live on 12 March 2022 and running through 22 March 2022. The drive introduced two structural firsts for PLEX for Good:
- CCP matching. CCP committed to matching every dollar of player donations up to a $250,000 cap. This was the first time CCP had explicitly matched player contributions on a drive.
- Dual recipient. Funds were split between UNHCR (the UN Refugee Agency, supporting Ukrainians who had fled to neighbouring countries) and the National Bank of Ukraine Humanitarian Assistance account (supporting those still inside Ukraine). The split was a direct response to community feedback that purely-external refugee aid would not reach civilians sheltering in active conflict zones.
The drive raised $501,652 in total - including the CCP match - making it by a wide margin the largest single PLEX for Good drive in the programme's history. It exceeded the prior record-holder, the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan drive ($190,890), by more than 2.5x. It also pushed the programme's lifetime total over the $1 million mark for the first time.
Press coverage of this drive substantially exceeded any previous PLEX for Good campaign. Major mainstream gaming and tech outlets (Polygon, Engadget, Massively OP, Kotaku-adjacent press, root-nation.com) ran multi-paragraph features. UNHCR's own communications team acknowledged the donation. CCP followed up with a results-announcement post on 31 March 2022.
For EVE-history context: this drive ran during the AIR Career Programme lead-up and the extended Scarcity era - a tonally rough period for the in-game economy that the community-goodwill arc of the Ukraine drive contrasted sharply with. It also coincided with Resvik 2022 Fanfest preparation, the first post-pandemic in-person Fanfest.
