Twelve years after taking over Goonswarm, and a week after Something Awful chat-log leaks surfaced his handling of an internal harassment case, The Mittani stepped down as CEO of GoonWaffe and Executor of Goonswarm Federation, calling himself "too radioactive to continue leading". TheAdj took over as interim CEO; Asher Elias became Executor a week later.

The Mittani Resigns from Goonswarm

Background: a 12-year Mittani-led Goonswarm

The Mittani took over the Goonfleet/GoonWaffe CEO chair in May 2010, weeks after Darius JOHNSON had stepped down to absorb the alliance-leadership shock of the Karttoon disbandment. Twelve years and two months later, in mid-July 2022, he stepped down again. The intervening decade is what The Rise of The Mittani sets the foundations for and what the rest of the corpus's Goonswarm cards build on. Goonswarm Federation was formally founded on 1 June 2010 from the LODRA wreckage; the post-Karttoon institutional policies The Mittani had laid out in his first SoaSS column as returning CEO (wallet-corp separation, no-single-director-trust, public-presence-required) became the operational spine of the alliance.

Across those twelve years the Mittani-led Goonswarm absorbed and survived every major nullsec war: the ClusterFuck Coalition consolidation through 2010-2012, the Fountain War of 2013, the Halloween War of 2013-2014, the Battle of B-R5RB in 2014, the 2015 CFC-to-Imperium rebrand, the Casino War of 2016 (which forced the alliance out of Deklein and into Delve), and the World War Bee II / PAPI siege of 1DQ-1A in 2020-2021 that ended with the PAPI retreat from Delve. At twelve years two months, his tenure was the longest in Goonswarm leadership history.

The alliance Mittani inherited in May 2010 was structurally fragile and reputationally damaged from the Karttoon walkout. The alliance he handed off in July 2022 was the institutionally dominant force in nullsec, with the Imperium coalition built underneath it, the post-Karttoon wallet-corp policies still load-bearing, and a public-voice and press infrastructure (The Mittani's Sins of a Solar Spymaster column, the Imperium News editorial operation, The Meta Show as the alliance's weekly broadcast) that no other coalition could match. The 2022 resignation closes a personal arc that opened with the same character's earlier failed CEO stint during the T20 BPO-leak scandal of 2007; it also closes the 2010-2022 institutional rebuild that the Karttoon shock had triggered.

The Meta Show and the community-criticism arc

The Meta Show had been the Imperium's flagship live broadcast since November 2014. The Mittani anchored it from 2016 onward; Brisc Rubal joined as co-host in November 2019. The show's weekly cadence put the alliance leader in front of a live audience for two-to-three hours of unscripted commentary on EVE-political events, often with PAPI / hostile-bloc figures invoked by name and openly mocked. During the World War Bee II siege of 1DQ-1A through 2020 and 2021, the show became the public surface of the Goonswarm political voice; Mittani's mocking of PAPI leadership was part of the deliberate engagement-driving strategy that kept the alliance's morale up through a fourteen-month defensive war.

By 2022, the same broadcast style that had been load-bearing during WWB2 was diverging from the cultural-revolution norms the alliance had been formally trying to enforce since the post-Fountain-War internal cleanup of 2013-2014. Wilhelm Arcturus's TAGN post the day after the resignation, "Fruits of the Cultural Revolution," sets out the institutional contradiction at length: the alliance had been publicly pushing back against gamer-culture toxicity for nearly a decade, while its most visible leader continued to weaponise mockery and gendered insult as broadcast craft on the alliance's flagship show.

The proximate trigger landed in the second week of July 2022. A Goonswarm-internal harassment case had been escalated through alliance channels and dismissed; chat logs from The Mittani's private Something Awful forum posts on the same matter were then leaked to r/Eve. The leaked excerpts showed Mittani in private SA chat dismissing the harassment complaint and using gendered slurs against the complainant. PC Gamer's Andy Chalk piece, the canonical mainstream-press deep-dive published the day INN's BREAKING editorial ran, summarises the wider pattern of allegations beyond the SA leak itself: that The Mittani had "insulted and banned one high-profile member who came forward with complaints of abuse," and had endorsed the ongoing membership of a Goonswarm officer despite that person having been banned from Something Awful a decade earlier over allegations of involvement with child pornography. From inside the alliance, the dynamic was plain: "Quotes from him, posted all over r/eve, were the first thing I saw that made me feel that something was really wrong."

A first round of alliance bans hit the complainants rather than the original subject of the complaint, and those bans were reversed within days under sustained community pressure. By the second weekend of July the leadership crisis was visible on every EVE-political surface the alliance and its detractors shared. The Saturday-night Meta Show on 16 July 2022 was the first broadcast after the leak broke; Brisc Rubal opened the show with an extended on-air acknowledgement, with Karmafleet CEO Merkelchen alongside him. The structure of the apology was the proximate frame the Mittani's own resignation arrived inside the day before.

15 July 2022: the resignation and the "radioactive" framing

The Mittani's formal resignation went out as an alliance ping plus a post to the GoonFleet forums on Friday 15 July 2022. INN's BREAKING editorial reproduction of the statement followed on 20-21 July.

INN's BREAKING editorial by Dirk Stetille reproduced the resignation post verbatim, and Nosy Gamer's same-week summary did the same. The full statement, as posted to the GoonFleet forums:

My people, I’m afraid that the sheer amount of smears being flung my way across the galaxy are simply too much to handle at a personal level. The fact that my divorce, the loss of my dog, and a terrible number other of outright lies and falsehoods have been heaped on top of each other has resulted in me becoming simply too radioactive to continue leading Goonswarm without my presence being a net negative for the wider tribe. The accusations that I am aware of are unsubstantiated falsehoods, and I did not sign up to be the scapegoat for the entire galaxy. You deserve better in leadership than having to continually be confronted with MITTANI MAN BAD day in, day out; I, and my partner, deserve better than to wake each day to find some new horrific slander being levelled against me. The only honorable thing to do is exit in an orderly fashion. I have transferred shares to Xttz and will be making TheAdj Interim CEO of Goonwaffe. A challenge of this position – sitting in the Big Chair – is that the entire rest of Eve Online feels that they can, without boundaries, restraint, or evidence, fling all kinds of shit at the leader of GSF. I do not envy my successor, but hope that my exit will clear the way towards a better future.

It has been a tremendous honor to serve you these past 12 years as CEO. We have, together, built the greatest and most interesting space empire in the history of the internet, and then we have beaten the entirety of the rest of the game with it in the greatest war in the history of the internet. Your successes, your friendships, your community, and the bonds we have formed with one another through all of the madness that is Eve Online will be memories I will keep forever. As I transfer roles and hand assets over, the current team will continue stabilizing the organization. They have been hard at work and information and announcements will be coming. Please bear with them as they have been trying to both build new systems and improve processes, while managing a very challenging and complex situation. Please be gentle with them.

As for me, I am going to touch some grass and smoke some weed. It’s been an honor and a privilege~

The "too radioactive" framing was the line the press picked up and most of the EVE community remembered. The "MITTANI MAN BAD" line was the rhetorical inversion the Mittani-handle had specialised in for fifteen years: taking the most aggressive shorthand the alliance's critics had used against him and weaponising it as his own self-summary. The "Big Chair" interjection in the middle of that sentence ("A challenge of this position, sitting in the Big Chair, is that...") was a recurring SoaSS-era idiom for the CEO position, recognisable to any long-time reader of the column. The Xttz share-transfer and TheAdj interim-CEO handoff went out as the same statement. The tilde at the end of "It's been an honor and a privilege~" is a typographic marker the Mittani had used for years as a signoff, including across the SoaSS column archive.

Brisc Rubal had opened the Saturday-16 Meta Show with the canonical apology framing that Nosy Gamer transcribed verbatim. The opening:

Today, July 16th, 2022, the news of the day. Probably the biggest news we’ve had in EVE Online in quite a long time. The Mittani, one of the most well-known players in the history of EVE Online, has resigned as alliance leader of Goonswarm Federation and coalition leader of The Imperium. This follows a week or more of some of the toughest times I think we have seen in this game in quite a long time. Allegations of sexual harrassment, allegations of the mishandling of complaints, allegations of all kinds of things in the community, real life and in the game.

The Brisc Meta Show on Saturday 16 July put the resignation in the past tense, five days before INN's editorial publication. Brisc's continued running of the show under the apology framework, alongside Merkelchen, became the de facto Goonswarm publlic voice through the rest of July and into August. The internal forum-post sign-off ("touch some grass and smoke some weed") and the broadcast-public framing ("biggest news we've had in EVE Online") were two different audiences hearing the same week play out from different ends.

Aftermath: TheAdj, Asher Elias, and the post-Mittani Imperium

TheAdj held the Interim CEO of GoonWaffe role for thirteen days, 15-28 July 2022. The interim period was deliberately short by design: long enough to give the alliance a stable handoff while the share-transfer-and-replacement process ran, short enough that the Mittani-resignation news cycle did not have time to entirely settle before the new permanent leadership announcement arrived.

Asher Elias was named the new Executor on 28 July 2022. INN's "Asher Ascends to the Apex of the Alliance" and TAGN's "Asher Ascendant and the New Age of Risk for the Imperium" both reproduce his prepared inaugural Fireside Chat speech in full. The speech beats that landed publicly included a structural critique of the previous leadership's risk-aversion logic during the World War Bee II defence of 1DQ-1A. Asher's most-cited passage:

I was specifically told I was not allowed to attack, that all I could do was camp. Because even though we had one of the greatest moments in the history of wars in Eve Online there was a still a 5% chance of failure. And that 5% chance of failure was too much of a risk to lose our merchandising and our subscribers. The goal was not to win, it was only never to fail. And to me that was a betrayal.

The reference is to the Battle of M2-XFE in December 2020, when the Imperium had a structurally winnable killshot opportunity against the PAPI fleet anchored at the Keepstar but was held back by leadership decisions Asher was now publicly indicating he had disagreed with at the time. The retrospective TAGN framing was that the "call came from inside the house": Mittani's resignation had been driven not by external attackers winning a battle in EVE but by GoonSwarm-internal coalition politics finally tipping enough leadership figures into open dissent. The True Goon SA-loyalist faction whose internal-purity politics had run through the alliance's history since the Remedial era was, on that reading, "in part responsible for setting the stage for his exit."

Asher's personal-style contrast with the Mittani was explicit in the press coverage: "Mittens bragged about never logging in and playing the meta game ... Asher, while he has his own Twitch channel, is probably better known there for League of Legends videos." The Meta Show resumed under Brisc Rubal and Merkelchen with the on-air apology framework holding. The alliance's institutional voice continued; the in-game alliance kept fielding fleets; the cultural tone moved away from the weekly-twitch-show political theatre toward in-game capital-fleet operations and the kind of risk-taking Asher had signalled in his inaugural speech.

The Mittani himself withdrew from EVE community life over the months that followed: no Meta Show appearances, no SoaSS columns, no streamed presence. The 17-year arc that had opened with the original 2005 alt-character creation, peaked with the Fanfest 2012 wizard's hat and the 2010-2022 GoonWaffe / Goonswarm Federation tenure, and ended with the "touch some grass" 2022 farewell, finished there. Sixteen months later the Jay Amazingness heist would test whether the post-Mittani Goonswarm could absorb the kind of insider sabotage the post-Karttoon institutional policies had been designed to survive, and the alliance, under Asher's leadership, would absorb it. The contemporaneous framing of Jay was that "after Karttoon, this all seems a bit tame." The 2010 Karttoon shock had set the spine; the 2022 Mittani resignation tested the political institution; the 2023 Jay heist tested the operational one. Both tests landed without breaking the alliance the Mittani had spent twelve years building from the blank canvas Karttoon had left.

Returning player note

If your mental model of Goonswarm-and-the-Imperium still has The Mittani at the top, you are a few years out of date. He resigned in July 2022 after a week of leaked internal chat logs and harassment-handling allegations, calling himself "too radioactive" to continue. Asher Elias has run Goonswarm Federation and the Imperium since the end of that month, and the cultural tone is materially different - less weekly twitch-show political theatre, more in-game capital fleets and risk-taking.

Goonswarm and the Imperium remain dominant in Delve, but they are not the same alliance under the same leadership you may remember. The Meta Show continues under Brisc Rubal and Merkelchen. The Mittani himself stepped back from EVE community life over the months that followed; you are unlikely to encounter him on streams or alliance comms any more.
