Fanfest 2020 Cancelled (COVID-19)
On 28 February 2020, CCP cancelled EVE Fanfest 2020 - the April 2-4 Reykjavik gathering - citing the rapidly developing COVID-19 situation. It was one of the first major gaming conventions to cancel for COVID, weeks before the WHO declared a pandemic. CCP refunded tickets and pivoted to a year of online events.
Fanfest did not return as a full-scale physical event until Fanfest 2022 (May 5-7, 2022), and Fanfest 2023 (September 21-23) became the marquee 20th-anniversary celebration. Several smaller community events (EVE Vegas, EVE London) were also paused or downscaled across 2020-2021.
During the gap CCP ran several digital substitutes - a streamed "Eve Fanfest Home" event, expanded Twitch programming, and the CCP-anchored Twitch Drops program - many of which became permanent additions afterwards.
Fanfest is back, but the 2020-21 cancellation gap re-shaped EVE's community-events calendar and accelerated CCP's investment in livestream content. The flagship physical Fanfest is now annually in Reykjavik again (Fanfest 2026 is upcoming).
