Capsuleer Day 2016 - thirteenth anniversary

On 6 May 2016 EVE Online turned thirteen, marked with a CCP news post titled "EVE Online turns teenager! Happy Birthday New Eden!" The 2016 gift drop was deliberately light: an anniversary Capsule SKIN "courtesy of the Upwell Consortium," plus a Festival Launcher and fireworks redeemable from the character-selection screen. There was no event arc and no themed combat sites - Capsuleer Day was still operating in the pre-formal-branding mode it had used since the start.

The light touch was almost certainly intentional. The Citadel expansion had gone live just nine days earlier, on 27 April 2016, introducing player-owned Astrahus, Fortizar, and Keepstar structures and triggering the largest single shift in nullsec infrastructure since outposts. CCP's anniversary messaging in 2016 leaned heavily into the Upwell Consortium framing - the in-fiction megacorp behind citadels - making the Capsule SKIN itself a Citadel-era marketing artifact rather than a standalone anniversary piece.

The 2016 anniversary also fell during the early weeks of the Casino War / WWB1, which formally opened on 1 May 2016. Capsuleers logging in for the birthday SKIN that weekend stepped into a nullsec already mid-collapse. There's no in-fiction connection between Capsuleer Day and the war - the juxtaposition is purely real-world calendar - but it does underline why the 2016 anniversary feels muted in retrospect: it was sandwiched between the largest expansion of the year and the largest war of the decade.

This was the last Capsuleer Day before the 2017 14th-anniversary addition of a YC-branded Capsule SKIN naming convention, and the last two-year stretch before the 2018 XV reset of the entire format.
